When a young street boy has a chance encounter with a young dancer while he is hiding from the police, self-discovery is channeled through the music of Frédéric Chopin on an animated journey into the magic of dance and the thrill of first love.
Karol, a young boy with a magic chaplinesque charm, lives in an abandoned factory in a modern Polish city. While evading capture for shoplifting Karol hides in a piano outside a theatre. The piano gets moved, with him inside, into the theatre, where he views boys and girls rehearsing for a televised dance competition. One of the competitors is a serious young girl, Anna, who steals Karol’s heart with her pure virtuosity. Captivated, Karol disguises himself as an old man and gets a job as the theatre cleaner, to get close to Anna. With his street dance and carefree attitude he melts the seriousness of Anna, and whisks her away on a fantastical musical dance journey into night, set to Chopin’s études.
At the theatre the next day, Karol’s true identity is uncovered, and Anna has to choose between Karol and the competition. The lure of fame beckons, and Karol leaves alone, but when the music of their magical night gets played in the finals of the competition, Anna chooses love and leaves the live TV show.
At first the TV cameras are aghast, then they sense real drama in the making, and follow Anna, to capture a union of street dancer and ballroom girl at the centre of a spontaneous street celebration set to the timeless beauty of Chopin.
